Konstrukcja there is i there are używana jest, aby powiedzieć, że coś lub ktoś gdzieś się znajduje/jest. Konstrukcja ta nie jest podmiotem i zawsze występuje z rzeczownikiem. Może ona pojawić się we wszystkich czasach i wtedy czasownik be (is lub are w czasie teraźniejszym) przyjmuje odpowiednią dla danego czasu formę.
